SUMMARY:

Brown Surgical Associates is seeking a Scribe to work in clinic on Wednesdays from 9 to 4 p.m. (East Greenwich location) and Fridays from 8:30 to 5 p.m. (MOC 2 Dudley St, Providence location).

The Scribe’s primary responsibility will be to assist the Brown Surgical medical provider(s) in accurately documenting patient encounters. Additionally, the Scribe will work directly with medical providers in various capacities to ensure proper coding of patient charts, maximize efficiency, and optimize patient throughput.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Please note: Scribes CANNOT touch any patients while performing work in the hospitals.

Documentation

• Accompany medical providers during the patient encounter to transcribe the history and physical exam as the patient is evaluated.
• Assign accurate evaluation and management codes to ensure the charts are coded to a proper level based on the acuity of the visit.
• Audit physician charts and provide appropriate feedback.

Provides Assistance

• Retrieve prior patient records including former EKGs, test results, and discharge summaries.
• Gather medical supplies as needed for various medical procedures performed.

General

• Scribes will comply with all hospital policies and requirements while performing work in the hospitals.
• Attends internal/external meetings and/or trainings related to areas of responsibility; when necessary.
• Meets with supervisor on a regular basis for supervision.
• Scribes must maintain professional behavior when interacting with staff members, hospital employees, vendors, and others.

Other

• To assist Brown Surgical Associates in an efficient manner, the Scribe will be expected to take part in other tasks assigned at the discretion of the supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

• Works well in a professional, fast-paced setting.
• Proficiency in typing.
• Professional verbal and written communication skills are required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor’s Degree preferred, but not required.
• Future desire to pursue a career in clinical medicine/healthcare
• Medical terminology and/or prior medical experience preferred.
• Prior healthcare experience may suffice in lieu of above qualifications.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Mild to moderate physical effort to perform basic clerical and typing duties. Some prolonged sitting and standing. Minor lifting.
